Session 5 - Some Party Infighting and the Arrival of a Guard Named Cullen

  • Furious that Baxs had destroyed most of the front of the tavern along with killing several merchants and merchant guards when he rode the cart through; several armed men trudged up the stairs to teach the halfling and his companions a lesson.
  • The party cut down several of the merchant guards before Azreal tells the remaining ones to "stand down" if they want to live. They do so.
  • Khun'tt on behalf of the landlord tells everyone to leave the pub unless they wish to help tidy up. The party except Khun'tt leave, who stays to tidy up the pub.
  • Further down the road, the party encounter a group of guards lead by a man called Cullen, they are surrounding an old shack.
  • According to Cullen an assassin called Merrith Stormguard is holed up there; he is apparently responsible for stealing from Lord Ironwolf and killing several of his guards.
  • John the Bard convinces the men to storm the house; once they are inside the sound of fighting breaks out while Baxs closes the door. Finally Cullen emerges alone, covered in blood and with the body of Merrith over one shoulder.
  • The party help bury his dead comrades and accompany him along the road on the way to Caldor.
  • Eventually the party find another wayside inn called the Prancing Fox and decide to stay the night; Cullen leaves to body of Merrith propped up at one of the tables and keeps an eye on it.
  • Khun'tt finished with tidying up the previous inn, bids the landlord good day and sets of to find the party. She also bars the door with the residents inside and burns to pub to the ground before setting off.
  • Azreal tries several times to lift some of the gear off the corpse only to be told by Cullen that it is property of Lord Ironwolf and if he tries to take anything off the corpse then he will have to go through Cullen.
  • As the party are enjoying a few drinks with Cullen at the wayside inn a tall dark figure kicks through the door accompanied by several shadows. He is a swordwraith.
  • The undead being accuses the party of killing the spymaster of the organisation he works for named the Undying Court. He also accuses them of hunting the "Tears of the Well" and that they belong to his masters. Before the party can answer, the swordwraith attacks.
  • Khun'tt is almost back with the party when she notices the battle from outside the pub; she lines up her crossbow and hits Fitz the ranger straight in the arm.
  • Azreal and John the Bard clash with the swordwraith while Baxs and Fitz engage the shadows. John the Bard did however see the shot aimed by Khun'tt, deliberately at her own party member.
  • The fight is ended by Azreal and Cullen taking the head of the swordwraith while Dongella melted the last remaining shadow with holy fire.
  • The fight may have been over, but it seemed an inter-party fight might well be on the way.
